from the Pastor’s Pen….
As you are probably aware, February is Black History Month. What you may not realize is that we have been paying homage to our own Black History in our worship services this month. On February 5 our Prayer of Great Thanksgiving was one written for the occasion, expressing gratitude for God’s presence in the midst of slavery, enabling survival through the “middle passage, auction blocks, whipping posts and forced labor.”
On February 19 our Prayer for Illumination was adapted from a prayer by the late Bishop Richard Allen. Allen was one of the most active and influential black leaders in the 18th century, founding the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church in Philadelphia, PA in 1794. This morning our Prayer for Illumination is adapted from a prayer by Howard Thurman, an influential African-American author, philosopher, theologian, educator and civil rights leader. His theology of radical nonviolence shaped a generation of civil rights activists, including Martin Luther King, Jr.
The Charlottesville City Council has declared Friday, March 3 “”Liberation and Freedom Day,” commemorating March 3, 1865, when 52% of the local population, some 14,000 enslaved individuals, began to be freed. Three events are planned for that day and I hope you will plan to attend at least one of them as a part of Wesley Memorial’s ongoing program, Beyond Denial–In Search of Grace, examining racism in Charlottesville.
